MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Mt Verde
The exhalent siphon of the giant clam Tridacna derasa.
(Canon Powershot G9, macro, F3.2, 1/250, ISO 80)
This species of giant clam comes in varying colour patterns, and on the Great Barrier Reef about half the specimens are lined with electric blue (see Derasa Whirlpool), and the other half have patterns of dark brown and green. The latter are usually somewhat drab, but occasionally I find a brillantly coloured green animal like the one that appears this month. All six species of giant clam on the GBR show variations in mantle colouration, and the beautiful patterns and vivid colours are a macro-photographer's delight!
