MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Tentacle Towers
The branch tips of the coral Acropora millepora with polyps extending their tentacles for feeding.
This image was taken at Florence Bay, Magnetic Island, during one of my Reef Ecotours. Acropora millepora is a particularly tempting subject for macro photography, because of its shades of orange and pink, and the flared mouths of each polyp which give it a special beauty. This colony had extended its polyp tentacles for zooplankton feeding, and the light on the multitudes of tentacle tips on the middle branch created a wonderful pattern.
(Olympus 5050Z, Supermacro, F5.6, 1/160, ISO 200, natural light).
