MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Beams 2

Sunlight scatters through a plate coral at Clerke Reef, Rowley Shoals.

Each year in early October I am very fortunate to visit the Rowley Shoals as marine biologist and photographer with North Star Cruises. The Rowleys are a group of 3 atolls in the North-East Indian Ocecan, situated on the edge of the continental shelf some 300km offshore from Broome. The cruises are timed to coincide with the pre-wet season doldrums, and we are regularly treated to the amazing sight of total glass-out conditions across the massive atoll lagoons and surrounding open ocean.

At these times, it is possible to capture some very special images incorporating the smooth water surface and the underlying reef. I turned upside down beneath a wide plate coral and was thrilled to see the starburst effect of the sunlight coming through the small gaps in the branches. I shot about 6 images of this coral, and the one above had the best composition of light, water surface and fish.
