MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Avian Dawn
A huge flock of white capped noddy terns head out to sea at dawn.
Seabird Islet is a small scrap of rock no more than 100m long, perched right on the windward edge of the reef front at Lizard Island lagoon. Thousands of terns roost here, with white capped noddies being the most abundant. Every morning at sunrise, the flock takes wing, and circles the islet several times before heading out to sea to feed all day. The combination of a coral sea sunrise and teeming multitudes of birds makes an incredible sight! To get this shot, I got up well before dawn and headed up lagoon in a boat, found my position in the dark, and waited. I shot maybe 40 images of the sun emerging from the horizon, until it disappeared behind this cloud. I thought things were over for this shoot and was just about to leave, when the sun topped this squall line and lit up the sky once more - and the birds happened to be just in the right place.
