MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Derasa Whirlpool

Close up of the surface of the mantle and siphon of the clam Tridacna derasa.

This image was taken at the Clam Gardens, Lizard Island. T. derasa is known for its vivid mantle colouration, and this specimen was heavily marked with bright electric blue. I set the camera to super-macro setting and got the lense right down near the clam, and used a long depth of field to try and get most of the mantle in focus. I took over 20 images of this clam, and was happy with the visual effect of a flowing set of rapids coming down into a whirlpool around the siphon in this particular shot.

(Olympus 5050Z, SuperMacro, F8, 1/200, ISO 200, natural light).
