MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Wall of Eyes
A school of cardinal fish (Zoramia viridiventer) amongst Staghorn coral at the horseshoe reef bommie, Lizard Island. At first glance, these fish make an attractive subject, but I found that it is quite difficult to get good results shooting schools of cardinalfish amongst coral. I discarded a lot of shots which had central fish out of focus, or which simply looked too "busy". This was my third attempt over 6 months to shoot at this particular location, and this time I just persevered until I got something I was happy with. On this day, the fish in the school were mostly males brooding eggs in their mouths, and they hung together more closely than usual, which gave a nice symmetrical appearance to the school. Once again, luck played a big part - as the saying about good photography goes - "turn the camera on and be there!"
