MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Coral Garden
A diverse coral community along the reef front at Lizard Island.
The incredible complexity of the reef community is something that strikes everyone, from the first time snorkeller to the seasoned marine biologist. It can be quite hard to capture this complexity in an image however, with many reef shots either looking too "noisy", or failing to adequately record the full detail of what the eye is seeing. This shot from the front of Steve's Gully at Lizard Island had a nice combination of complex form and structure, and gives a good impression of the beauty of the coral reef. From an ecological perspective it is also a healthy community, with soft corals, hydrozoan corals, massive corals, foliacious corals, plates and branching corals all represented. A school of damselfishes (Neopomacentrus azysron and Chromis atripectoralis) are feeding above the reef.
(Olympus C7070WZ, F4, 1/200, ISO 200, natural light).
