MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Reef Erotica 1
The mouth and tentacles of the Giant Reef Anemone Heteractis magnifica.
Reef Erotica is the subject of a photo-exhibition I presented at the Perc Tucker regional gallery in Townsville in 2005, exploring the relationship between structure and colour on the coral reef, and our human notions of erotic form. I was inspired to start shooting a collection of Reef Erotica images midway through 2003, after seeing and photographing a particularly feminine form in a Favid coral at Lizard Island (I know what you're thinking - "the man has been on an isolated tropical island for too long"!). However, I must give credit for the anemone image shown here to my wonderful partner Mish, who encouraged me to keep seeing the reef through erotic glasses - she found this anemone mouth at Watson's Bay in September last year, and dragged me over to shoot it. It remains my favourite of the Reef Erotica collection.
