MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Reef Erotica 2
The mantle cavity of the giant clam Hippopus hippopus.
The vibrant colours of the giant clams are a constant source of amazement to me. Generally the species from the genus Tridacna are the most colourful, but the single species in the genus Hippopus also has some beautifully subtle patterns in the mantle. This shot shows the inner part of the exhalent siphon, and the large protruding golden lump at the top of the cleft is indeed the gonad of the animal - as you might expect, this image went straight into the Reef Erotica collection!
(Olympus 5050Z, F5.6, 1/320, ISO 100, natural light).
