MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Hydnophora
Close up of the surface of the coral Hydnophora exesa.
This image was taken at North Reef on Orpheus Island. The coral had a remarkable glowing green colour which was visible from quite some distance away. Corals in the genus Hydnophora are characterised by the presence of raised bumps or "hydnophores" over the surface of the colony, and these can be clearly seen in this picture. The polyps themselves are very small, and appear as small balls in the valleys between the hydnophores.
(Olympus 5050Z, SuperMacro, F4, 1/160, ISO 100, natural light).
