MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Melanopus
The damselfish Amphiprion melanopus in the anemeone Entamacea quadricolor.
For a long time, I didn't bother trying to take artistic clownfish pictures, as I thought they were an "easy" subject that had been done to death by every other underwater photographer with a Nikonos and a battery of strobes. However, I needed scientific pictures of them for my Image Library, so eventually I had to try and shoot some under natural light conditions - at which point I discovered that they aren't so easy to shoot after all, particularly while free-diving! They tend to move around a lot when the photographer gets close to the anemone, and they rarely present a decent profile. I still don't have many shots of them that I'm happy with, but the one shown here is probably my favourite - I like the deep shadows in the top right corner, and the image of the brilliantly coloured fish peeping out from deep inside a nest of tentacles.
