MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Monsoon

Rain clouds sweep toward Lizard Island.

The wet season is such a fantastic time to be in North Queensland, with the regular rain storms transforming the landscape and mixing wonderful shades of tropical green with the sound of waterfalls, frogs and thunder. The reef environment also takes on a different character at this time of year, with the monsoon sweeping down from Indonesia, bringing the north-west winds laden with rain. In the warm seas, all the reef animals indulge in an orgy of growth and reproduction, and everywhere mother nature seems to be at the peak of fertility. This shot was taken on a recent trip to Lizard Island, with a small patch of sunlight illuminating the turquoise waters, in stark contrast to the black rain clouds bearing down on the beach. Five minutes after the shot was taken, torrential rain enveloped the island and an early darkness fell. The rain continued all night.......
