MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Number 10
Patterns on the water surface at Number 10 Ribbon Reef.
The Ribbon Reefs line the edge of the continental shelf, and extend from near Cairns all the way to the Northern end of the Great Barrier reef at the doorstep of Papua New Guinea. This image was taken at the "Cod Hole", a popular dive site on the northern end of Number 10 Ribbon Reef, just offshore from Lizard Island. The reef is bathed in crystal clear water from the coral sea, and the visibility is outstanding. With water this clear, the depths of colour and texture in the blues of the water surface are a constant source of wonder to me. I like this view, as it is the one you see many times each day while working on the reef, just before breaking the water surface after a dive - the trade wind creating upside-down sculptures in turquoise glass.
