MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Ocean Rock Sky
The view at dawn from Olympus lookout, Magnetic Island.
I was a regular visitor to Magnetic Island for 12 years before moving onto the island permanently in 1999, and I am constantly inspired by the beauty of the place. For 2 years or so, I lived in a shack on Olympus Crescent, which runs up onto the headland near Alma Bay. There is a wonderful high rock lookout at the end of the street overlooking Fish Cove, and this image shows the view from the rock looking south-east. This spot was literally 50m from my front door, and I used to photograph the dawn here as often as I could, just trying to work out how the light changed as the sun rose, and trying to capture the changing moods of each day. I took many images looking east toward the sunrise, but on this day in April 2004 there was spectacular light on the cloud formations away to the south, which gently illuminated the rocky headlands and hoop pines which are so characteristic of the island. The mountain in the distance is Mt Elliot (1218 m), the last rainforest refuge in the wet tropics bioregion.
