MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Stingray's Cave
A Blue-spotted Lagoon Ray Taeniura lymna resting under a ledge at Lizard Island.
Blue-spotted stingrays are usually quite difficult to get close to, and when I saw this one under a bommie in the Lizard Island lagoon, I assumed it would blast out of its hiding place at high speed as soon as I approached it for a decent picture. However, the ray stayed motionless as I gradually moved closer, so I guess it was alseep. There was very little light to work with, and luckily I was able to prop the camera on the bottom to get a stable image at this very low shutter speed. I like how the dusting of fine sand over the animal adds another texture to the image, and the short depth of field gives the impression of space in the darkness of the cave behind the ray.
