MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Sarcophyton
The fleshy folds of the soft coral Sarcophyton.
I attempt to take most of my images using naturally available light, which presents a considerable challenge. Midday sunlight over shallow coral reefs is often very harsh. In many cases, a slightly overcast sky can mellow the light and deepen the colours, but of course if the cloud cover is too extreme, then you lose the shutter speed necessary for a clear image at high resolution. On this particular day at Lizard Island, there was a very fine layer of high cloud that appeared around midday, and a glassy water surface, which is a very rare combination. I had only 20 minutes in which to work, so I raced out to the Horseshoe patch reef, right in front of the Lizard Island research station, and looked for subjects. This soft coral was about the best on offer, and I shot perhaps 15 frames before jumping back on the boat. I like the patterning of light and shadow over the folds of the coral, and the way the waves in the water surface are mimicked in the Sarcophyton. Nature so very rarely draws straight lines.
