MARINE IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Trident
An aerial root of the mangrove Rhizophora stylosa.
Lizard Island has a number of amazing features along with its spectacular coral reefs. One of these is a small stand of mangroves at the eastern end of One-Tree beach, which grow in the pristine blue waters of the lagoon. This is one of the few places in North Queensland where it is possible to snorkel in a mangrove system and not risk being eaten by a saltwater crocodile! In addition, the clear water makes for some incredible photo opportunities, and it is one of my favourite (and most challenging) places to shoot. I loved this root as soon as I saw it, and I loved the image that the camera captured. The surface reflections, and the smooth curves of the trident have a very Zen quality to them. Interestingly, I shot this image in September 2003, and when I returned to the exact location in May 2004, the root had grown all the way down to the sand below. So the root you see in the image above has now irreversibly changed.
